Peculiar Patriot

Role of Projections

The Peculiar Patriot confronts the complex and critical issue of mass incarceration. The Projections both provide context and urgency, but guide the emotional journey of the character, Betsy Ross. From going through security, to bus rides to the correctional facility, the design follows Betsy’s journey to visit her friend while she is locked up. During moments of heightened performance, the projections pop out to highly stylized content that highlights the wild injustice people of color face within the prison industrial complex and the directly link to the transatlantic slave trade in the United States.
