Stars Hold Our Stories

THE STARS HOLD OUR STORIES is a platform for exchange. A flexible space for participants and performers to conjure narratives and scientific information from a multimedia skyscape to share stories that connect us. It uses the night sky as an interactive bridge between people through time and space. The work is a reactive skyscape generated from the Gaia catalogue, a database of over 1.3 billion stellar distances.

The installation activates to become an immersive and synergistic performance experience, weaving together artistry, design, theatricality, astrophysics, indigenous astrological knowledge and mythology.

The activation highlights the similarities of shared traditional cultural astrological knowledge from Haiti, to Mexico, to Puerto Rico, to Turtles Island, told by the people they belong to. In addition to performances that occur under the digital night sky, audiences will discover a multitude of stories and information through their own exploration of an online portal and Augmented Reality (AR) mobile application. This self driven exploration provides context, learning, and understanding through beauty, play and discovery of a living database of cultural astrological knowledge and oral storytelling.

THE STARS HOLD OUR STORIES is a collaboration between artist Kate Freer and astrophysicist Jackie Faherty as a part of the New York Hall of Science ACCESS: Space Exploration Festival.
